This wall-hanging ceramic piece was created by Silvia Leuchovius in her Rörstrand studio. The silhouette depicts a bird, one of Leuchovius's favorites, with a deep, glossy black glaze and a cluster of white dots at the wings to create texture. The individual pools of glaze on the abdomen add to the piece's expressiveness, and when viewed from a distance, the black surface catches the light like a mirror, casting shadows on the wall.

What's interesting about this piece is that it's not a flat ceramic tile, but rather a dish-like piece with raised edges that act as a picture frame, making it a small piece of art.

Silvia is one of Sweden's leading ceramic artists of the 20th century, and was active for many years at Rörstrand, where she is known for her stylized animal and plant motifs. The ceramic tiles she produces in her studio are different in both process and purpose from mass-produced vessels, and are highly refined as wall decorations.

■Detailed specifications

Manufacturer: Rörstrand
Artist: Sylvia Leuchovius
Type: Ceramic plate (wall hanging)
Produced by: Rörstrand Studio / Rörstrand Studio (Studio Productions)
Material: Stoneware
Era: Around 1960s-1970s (estimated based on Style Studio production information)
Country of origin: Sweden
Condition: ★★★★★ (5: Complete)
There is a spot on the back corner that appears to be chipped, but it is located in a "valley" and is not a new chip caused by use or impact, but rather a scratch caused by the base material during the manufacturing process (such as impacts before and after firing or contact during the glazing stage). It does not affect the aesthetic value of the piece. With vintage ceramic tiles, these individual differences can remain as "traces of production."

■Size: Width 22cm, Height 12.5cm, Thickness 2.6cm

Rörstrand

Rörstrand

Rörstrand is Scandinavia's oldest porcelain manufacturer, founded in 1726 in Stockholm, Sweden. The company produced many of Sweden's most celebrated designers, including Marianne Westman, Gunnar Nylund, and Carl-Harry Stålhane. Rörstrand tableware has been used at events such as the Nobel Prize banquet.

Rörstrand produces both everyday tableware and artistic masterpieces. As Europe's second oldest porcelain maker after Meissen, Rörstrand holds a distinguished place in ceramic history. Notably, ARABIA — now known as a Finnish manufacturer — originally started as Rörstrand's Helsinki factory. Our store offers a wide range of products from this most traditional and historic Nordic maker, from art pieces to everyday tableware.

Sylvia Leuchovius

Sylvia Leuchovius

Silvia Leuchovius ( Sylvia Leuchovius, 1915-2003)

Born in the Småland region of southern Sweden. Originally, he wanted to become a clothing designer and took up a job as a dressmaker, but at the age of 30, after studying art graphics at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Gothenburg in the southwest, he changed his job to Rorstrand. He established himself as a unique artist, setting himself apart from mass production lines by manufacturing ceramic plates and still life paintings in-house. Although he has an unusual background as a designer, it is clear that he was highly regarded within the company, as he was entrusted with the design of Rorstrand's 250th anniversary model. Her ceramic motifs and her university background match those of Lisa Larson, and she has a distinct presence in the Nordic art scene.
