This is a ceramic plate called the UNIK series created in 1967 by Lisa Larsson, a representative Swedish potter. Lisa Larson designed nine different ceramic plates, including cats, birds, horses, elephants, and more. This is a drawing of a round cat. Each ceramic plate was handmade one by one at Gustavsberg's atelier called G Studio in the capital Stockholm.

The UNIK series has two types of ceramic plates: a sitting cat and a round cat, and this one is the latter. It is a depiction of a cat from the front, and is notable for its strong fur, similar to a lion's mane. The front legs are carefully lined up, and the cuteness of sitting a little is also expressed in a Lisa Larson style. This is one of Lisa Larson's ceramic plates, which is one of the representative works in the UNIK series and has the highest reputation.

The UNIK series Since it was produced for a long period of 20 years until 1986 , there are considerable differences in color tone depending on the era. Generally, the color becomes brighter as it ages, but this ceramic plate uses a relatively dark glaze, so it is thought to have been manufactured in the 1970s.

Lisa Larson likes to use cat motifs a lot, but while cats are often depicted with realistic and sharp eyes, lions, which also belong to the feline family, are depicted with a gentleness similar to a cat. It is characterized by You can feel the deformation unique to Lisa Larson, where cute things are sharp and sharp things are soft.

Lisa Larson (1931-2024)

A world-renowned Swedish ceramicist, he was born in Härlunda, a village of about 500 people in the Älmhult district of Kronoberg county in the Småland region in southern Sweden.

As a child, she aspired to be a fashion designer, but after enrolling at the Gothenburg Academy of Art, she studied ceramics. One day, she was discovered by Stig Lindberg at a competition, and after a one-year probationary period, she officially joined Gustavsberg as a designer. Shortly thereafter, in 1955, she released the Lilla Zoo series, and in 1964, she came up with the Afrika series, famous for its lion statues.

Lisa Larson has not only worked for Gustavsberg, but has also provided designs for Höganäs, the major domestic retailer Åhléns, and the German ceramic manufacturer Rosenthal. After leaving Gustavsberg in 1979, she became a freelance artist, working on a voluntary basis with companies, rather than as an exclusive contractor, and continued to work freely in various fields. In 1979 and 1981, she held solo exhibitions at Seibu Department Store in Tokyo, and the 1981 exhibition was visited by a total of 70,000 people.
