スウェーデンの国民的作家が生んだ 手のひらに宿る北欧の物語

This is a hand-painted cup by Lisa Larson from K Studio. The bold rhythm of circles is painted in shades of cobalt on a pale blue glaze. The brush strokes and fluctuations, which cannot be seen in mass-produced prints, are preserved as they are in the landscape. It's simple, yet captivating. This piece truly showcases the strength of handcrafted work.

The K Studio referred to here refers to Keramik Studion Gustavsberg (K-Studion) , the in-house workshop that Lisa Larson established at Gustavsberg in 1993. Lisa left Gustavsberg in 1979 to work as a freelancer, but was welcomed back to the company when an environment was created where she could concentrate on her creative work. K Studio was where Lisa, already a world-class artist, worked in an "artist's workshop" separate from the mass production line. Notable features of her work include the limited number of pieces she produces, the fact that each piece is hand-signed, and the clear variations in each piece. The appeal of K Studio's works is that while they are tableware, they also represent Lisa Larson's "atelier works."

The back of the cup is signed by Lisa in her own hand and has the number 96 written on it. This means that the piece was created in 1996, and even if the design is the same, the thickness of the lines, the way the blue bleeds, and the way the circles overlap are all different for each piece. This is the type of hand-painted piece that you will grow to love more and more the more you use it.

Compared to Lisa's works from the Gustavsberg period, this piece's appeal lies in the rhythm and lightness of her brushstrokes, rather than the earthy tones and sculptural volume. Unlike the strength shown in the three-dimensional shadows and deep glazes seen in her masterpieces from the Gustavsberg period, this piece celebrates a simple beauty typical of Scandinavia, with the motifs stripped down to a minimum. As a handiwork from her later years, this piece offers a refined lightness and lingering impression.

The ideal capacity is 400ml, and when full, it is 520ml. In Scandinavia, there is a culture of pouring large amounts of coffee or chocolate drinks into large cups, so this size is designed with practicality in mind, a characteristic of Scandinavian culture. The blue color creates a pleasant presence when placed on a table, making this a striking piece of interior decor.

Lisa Larson

Lisa Larson (1931-2024)

A world-renowned Swedish ceramicist, he was born in Härlunda, a village of about 500 people in the Älmhult district of Kronoberg county in the Småland region in southern Sweden.

As a child, she aspired to be a fashion designer, but after enrolling at the Gothenburg Academy of Art, she studied ceramics. One day, she was discovered by Stig Lindberg at a competition, and after a one-year probationary period, she officially joined Gustavsberg as a designer. Shortly thereafter, in 1955, she released the Lilla Zoo series, and in 1964, she came up with the Afrika series, famous for its lion statues.

Lisa Larson has not only worked for Gustavsberg, but has also provided designs for Höganäs, the major domestic retailer Åhléns, and the German ceramic manufacturer Rosenthal. After leaving Gustavsberg in 1979, she became a freelance artist, working on a voluntary basis with companies, rather than as an exclusive contractor, and continued to work freely in various fields. In 1979 and 1981, she held solo exhibitions at Seibu Department Store in Tokyo, and the 1981 exhibition was visited by a total of 70,000 people.
