Lisa Larson Gustavsberg Typography Guild Gutenberg Porcelain Plate
Lisa Larson Gustavsberg Typography Guild Gutenberg Porcelain Plate
This is a rare ceramic plate designed by Lisa Larson at the request of a company. In 1973, Lisa Larson was commissioned by a business association to design three types of porcelain plates for the Bookbinders Association, the Clothing Association, and the Typography Association. This one was made at the request of the Typography Guild.
The ceramic plate depicts Johannes Gutenberg, the father of the printing press. Next to it is a hieroglyph. Gutenberg was originally a German goldsmith, but he used his manual dexterity to invent typesetting printing around 1440. The printed Gutenberg Bible was the first printed book in the West. The year 1450 drawn on the bottom left of the ceramic plate is the year the printing shop was established. The Gutenberg Bible was written in Latin, and it took another 70 years for the German Bible to be printed after Luther's Reformation.
The ceramic plate printing press is from the modern era, and the figure of a printing worker standing next to a large rotary press is depicted, giving a sense of the transition of history. In Gustavsberg, there was a department called G-Studion, where well-known designers such as Stig Lindberg and Lisa Larson produced artworks, apart from the mass-produced line. This is a work made in the atelier. Each piece is handmade, and the back is stamped with the name of Lisa Larson.
