ARABIA Annikki Hovisaari Peacock ceramic plate
ARABIA Annikki Hovisaari Peacock ceramic plate
This is a large ceramic plate that imitates a peacock made in the 1960s at the ARABIA art department in Finland. At ARABIA, apart from the factory line for mass production, there was a studio called the Art Department where ceramic artists made each piece by hand.
This is a ceramic plate produced in the workshop. The signature of the designer A HOVISAARI ARABIA is written on the lower left of the surface. Annikki Hovisari (1918-2004) is known for his vertically elongated ceramic panels called Ornamenti, which incorporate totem patterns and leaf designs. In the 1960s and 1970s, he was enrolled in the Art Department and worked with legendary designers such as Birger Kaipiainen and Laija Uosikkinen. While Kaipiainen and Uosikkinen had many gorgeous designs with rich decorativeness, mainly flowers, Hovisari preferred calm colors and simple designs.
The feature of Hovisari porcelain plates is that there are multiple sizes of porcelain plates with the same design. It seems that peacock porcelain plates and small tile-shaped ones were also produced. This ceramic plate is the largest size and has a thick glaze that gives it a strong presence in the interior. The splendor and brilliance of the peacock are scattered in diamond-like shapes and colored with glazes of various colors. The glaze has depth and is devised to change the expression depending on the amount of light.
A beautiful peacock is drawn with free proportions that greatly emphasize the torso. Because it is very large, it has a presence like a decoration in the alcove. Rather than a one-point interior, please use it as a leading interior that can be placed in the center of the room or placed in a well-visible place in the entrance.
