This is a hand-painted mug and saucer set created by the Art Department of Finland's leading pottery manufacturer ARABIA. Many of HLA's works are teacups, but this moss green mug is rare. This is a rare item that also comes with the original saucer.

In addition to the production line for mass-produced products at ARABIA, designer Hirkka Riisa Ahora had her own atelier in the form of an in-house workshop, where she collaborated with painters to create handmade pieces. Hirukka Leesa Ahora often likes to draw pictures of sunflowers, but she uses various colors depending on her work. This masterpiece has a scale-like pattern and the thick glaze gives it a three-dimensional feel.

The basic form is the S model of Ulla Procope, which is known for Valencia. It has a wide-mouthed body shape with an easy-to-grip handle called the "D handle." A relatively large capacity cup holds about 300ml.

ARABIA - Arabia

ARABIA factory

ARABIA is a ceramic manufacturer representing Finland in the 20th century. Originally, ARABIA was a factory established in Finland by Sweden's Rörstrand as a base for producing pottery for Russia. The company's name comes from the fact that it was established in the Arabian district of Helsinki, the capital.

From the 1950s to the 1980s, many world-famous designers such as Ulla Procoppe, Birger Kaipiainen, Laiya Uosikkinen, and Esteri Tomura created many works, known as the Golden Age of ARABIA. Works that had a great influence on modern modern design were created at the time, from simple Scandinavian modern designs to highly decorative and well-crafted pieces. ARABIA is known for its masterpieces such as paratissi, crocus, flora, and corari, which are both practical and decorative items unique to Scandinavian tableware that are useful for both interior and everyday use.

Hilkka-Liisa Ahola

Hilkka-Liisa Ahola
Hilkka-Liisa Ahola (1920-2009)

Born in Helsinki, the capital of Finland. After working as a trainee at ARABIA in 1943, he moved to several design positions. He officially joined ARABIA in 1947, and over the next 27 years until 1974, he produced many atelier works featuring floral patterns and female figures known as HLA designs. Each of her works is hand-painted, so no two pieces are the same, and her work is characterized by a unique sense of color, with many of her works being dark brown in color, using blues, browns, and yellows in reduced brightness. She became famous for her Kukka (flower) series released in 1958, and the vases with hand-painted flowers were a big hit and continued to be produced until the 1970s. In 1974, ARABIA downsized its art department due to a financial crisis, and she also left ARABIA accordingly. Since then, he has turned his attention to making batik dyeing as a freelancer.

After that, he was in charge of design in the production department for 20 years, creating the Ruska series in 1960 and the Valencia series in 1961 . Ruska became the longest-running and most sold flagship product of Arabia's products, and the form of Ruska was called the S model , which became the prototype model for subsequent ARABIA tableware. Valencia is the last hand-painted ARABIA product. After suffering from cancer and retiring from active duty, Procope moved to Spain's Canary Islands, where he died at the age of 47 .
