Uppsala Ekeby Ester Wallin yacht porcelain plate
Uppsala Ekeby Ester Wallin yacht porcelain plate
This ceramic plate was fired in a kiln in Uppsala, about 80 kilometers north of Stockholm, the capital of Sweden. The design was by a female designer named Ester Wallin, who initially worked at the Tilgman kiln in Gothenburg, southern Sweden, but when she was working independently as a freelancer, she received a request from Upsala Ekby around 1970. I am making this ceramic plate. It depicts three yachts sailing on the sea at dawn.
The gloomy sky is expressed by partially applying black to the light blue glaze, and the sea is covered with a thick ultramarine glaze to give it a sense of depth. A flag representing the direction of the wind sways at the tip of the sail of the yacht, expressing the movements of the yachts that are uniformly directed in the same direction. The lines are drawn by hand based on the sketch, and the glaze is also applied by hand by craftsmen. I think it would be difficult to make something like this today. It can be said that it is one of the excellent works of Scandinavian vintage from half a century ago. It is a heavy ceramic plate weighing about 2 kilograms, and is suitable for decorating a house by the sea or as a gift for people who like boats.
