Rorstrand Lars Thorén Bilder Brommeau Bowl
Rorstrand Lars Thorén Bilder Brommeau Bowl
It is a series called Bilder Brommo, which was manufactured in the 1940s by Swedish representative pottery maker Rorstrand. Birda Brommo means "flowers blooming in the field" in Swedish, and is a hand-painted depiction of a wide variety of flowers that bloom in the meadow. The flowers and plants drawn with free brushstrokes on the milky white base are shining, and you can feel the good old days when the craftsmen carefully drew each pattern one by one.
The designer was a person named Lars Toren who worked for the company from 1935 to 1957. A designer specializing in painting, he is also in charge of painting the works of Rorstrand master Carl Harry Starhan. The initials LTh, the initials of Lars Toren, are engraved on the bottom.
Bilda Brommeau is a rare piece in modern times that uses faience. Faience ware is a pottery made of red clay that is dried and then immersed in a white glaze called tin glaze. It is a method devised in ancient Egypt and is the oldest method of making pottery using glaze in the world. It is characterized by a milky white background that feels moist to the touch, and is not hard glassy, so it is easy to break. It's rare to find it in a clean condition today, so it's in very good condition for an 80-year-old vessel.
