Gustavsberg Eros Plate 25cm Platter F11
Gustavsberg Eros Plate 25cm Platter F11
Eros is the last masterpiece from the golden age of Gustavsberg, a long-established Swedish tableware manufacturer. It was designed during the final stage of the "mid-century" heyday of Scandinavian design, which lasted from the 1950s to the 1970s.
Eros is a very detailed plate that depicts a unique worldview with only a single touch of light brown. Eros comes in three sizes: a cake plate, a 21cm medium-sized plate, and a 25cm large plate. This is the largest 25cm plate.
Designer Stig Lindberg is known for his use of repeated deformed patterns, such as in his masterpiece Berså, but in Eros, each motif is depicted in a highly detailed, painterly style.
The painting of a man and woman in love, the fish swimming in a birdcage and the birds targeting them, the crescent moon and flowers in the background are all depicted in a venomous, surrealist worldview. The man and woman are Adam and Eve, the man wearing clothes and the woman wearing a necklace. In the Old Testament, Adam and Eve were said to have been completely naked before eating the fruit of knowledge, so this painting probably depicts them after they had eaten it. You can sense the story of both of them coming to know shame, learning to dress up, and pursuing a decadent world in search of pleasure. This is a vintage masterpiece packed with a detailed worldview into a small plate.
