Gustavsberg Arena 19.5 cm plate
Gustavsberg Arena 19.5 cm plate
A vintage plate from the famous Swedish kiln Gustavsberg. Gustavsberg has produced famous tableware based on two elements: pattern and color scheme. This Arena product was created by Stig Lindberg, one of the company's leading designers. Among his designs, Arena is a simple vessel, finished only with the vividness of the color scheme. Arena means ``Amphitheatre'', and the roundness of the plate is reminiscent of an arena, and the hand-painted orange color scheme is vivid and reminiscent of the intensity of martial arts.
His tableware designed around the same time includes a series named after Siena, a town in Tuscany, Italy. In his later years, Stig Lindberg moved to Italy, and this design shows how much he was interested in Italy.
Although it is an old series, manufactured between 1973 and 1978, it is a highly functional item that has excellent heat resistance and is dishwasher safe.

Stig Lindberg (1916-1982)
Born in Umeå, the central city of northern Sweden. Originally from Stockholm's art school Konstfack ( Learn painting at Konstfack. He joined Gustavsberg in 1937 and gradually rose to prominence under the tutelage of his mentor, Wilhelm Koge. Twelve years later, in 1949, he succeeded Koge as the company's art director in charge of design.
Since then, Lindberg has released numerous works as a standard bearer of Swedish modernism in the mid-20th century. During Lindberg's time, the Gustavsberg workshop was at its peak, and its works from that time are recognized as works from the golden period known as ``mid-century,'' and are highly valued. Lindberg's studio is called G-Studion, where young designers are demonstrating their skills and producing famous artists such as Lisa Larson.
