Arabia (ARABIA) Hirukka Leesa Ahora (HLA) Kuutamo (Kuutamo) 19.5cm plate
Arabia (ARABIA) Hirukka Leesa Ahora (HLA) Kuutamo (Kuutamo) 19.5cm plate
This plate bears the name of a piece called Kuutamo, created by the art department of ARABIA, one of Finland's leading ceramics manufacturers.
The series name, Kuutamo, is a combination of the Finnish words "Kuu" meaning "moon" and "Tamo" meaning "light," and refers to the moonlight shining into a tranquil and mysterious space. It is a word used in Finnish classics and epics.
Designer Hilkka-Liisa Ahola had her own atelier in the company, separate from the mass production line at ARABIA, where she worked with painters to create handmade pieces. This piece is a plate that was hand-painted one by one in the art department.
The plate is made up of all blues as the base color, with a slight yellow glaze used on the inner circumference, which represents moonlight. The expression of light spreading in a circular shape is reminiscent of a sunflower, and the motif of flower petals common to HLA's works can be felt at its root.
The back is signed with the designer's initials HLA, as well as the initials of the artist who actually hand-painted it.

Hilkka-Liisa Ahola
Born in Helsinki, the capital of Finland. After working as a trainee at ARABIA in 1943, he moved to several design positions. He officially joined ARABIA in 1947, and over the next 27 years until 1974, he produced many atelier works featuring floral patterns and female figures known as HLA designs. Each of her works is hand-painted, so no two pieces are the same, and her work is characterized by a unique sense of color, with many of her works being dark brown in color, using blues, browns, and yellows in reduced brightness. She became famous for her Kukka (flower) series released in 1958, and the vases with hand-painted flowers were a big hit and continued to be produced until the 1970s. In 1974, ARABIA downsized its art department due to a financial crisis, and she also left ARABIA accordingly. Since then, he has turned his attention to making batik dyeing as a freelancer.
