This is a plate named Kuutamo created by the Art Department of Finland's leading pottery manufacturer ARABIA.

The series name Kuutamo is a combination of the Finnish words ``Kuu'' meaning ``moon'' and ``Tamo'' meaning ``light,'' and it has the meaning of moonlight shining into a tranquil and mysterious space. This is a word used in Finnish classics and epic poems.

In addition to the production line for mass-produced products at ARABIA, designer Hirkka Riisa Ahora had her own atelier in the form of an in-house workshop, where she collaborated with painters to create handmade pieces. This piece is a plate that is individually hand-painted at the Art Department.

The basic color of the plate is all blue, with a deep indigo base, and a slightly yellow glaze is used on the inner periphery to represent moonlight. The expression of light spreading in a circular shape resembles a sunflower, and the petal motif common to HLA's works can be felt at its core.

The back is signed with HLA, the initials of the designer Hirukka Leesa Ahola, and the initials of the artist who actually hand-painted it.

Hilkka-Liisa Ahola

Hilkka-Liisa Ahola
Hilkka-Liisa Ahola (1920-2009)

Born in Helsinki, the capital of Finland. After working as a trainee at ARABIA in 1943, he moved to several design positions. He officially joined ARABIA in 1947, and over the next 27 years until 1974, he produced many atelier works featuring floral patterns and female figures known as HLA designs. Each of her works is hand-painted, so no two pieces are the same, and her work is characterized by a unique sense of color, with many of her works being dark brown in color, using blues, browns, and yellows in reduced brightness. She became famous for her Kukka (flower) series released in 1958, and the vases with hand-painted flowers were a big hit and continued to be produced until the 1970s. In 1974, ARABIA downsized its art department due to a financial crisis, and she also left ARABIA accordingly. Since then, he has turned his attention to making batik dyeing as a freelancer.
