This is a tea cup made at the Art Department of Finland's leading ceramic maker ARABIA. Designer Hilkka Liesa Ahola had her own atelier in the form of an in-house studio, separate from the production line for mass-produced products at ARABIA, and produced handmade works in collaboration with painters. Hilkka Liesa Ahora often likes to draw sunflowers, but they are painted in various colors depending on the work. Here, sunflower petals are drawn with a unique sense of color called blue.

The shape is straight and the mouth part is along the outside. It's shaped like a demitasse cup, but it's relatively large and holds about 250ml. The form is in charge of Ulla Procoppe, known from Valencia.

■ About the designer

Hilkka-Liisa Ahola (1920-2009)

Born in Helsinki. After working as a trainee at ARABIA in 1943, he held multiple design positions. In 1947, he officially joined ARABIA, and during the 27 years until 1974, he worked on many atelier works called HLA designs, featuring floral patterns and female figures. Since each of her works is hand-painted, no two are the same, and many of her works are characterized by a unique sense of color, especially in dark brown works that use blues, browns, and yellows with reduced luminosity. In 1958, she became famous for her Kukka (flower) series, and her vases with hand-painted flowers became a big hit and continued to be produced until the 1970s. In 1974, ARABIA downsized the art department due to a financial crisis, and she also left ARABIA accordingly. After that, he turned to the production of batik called batik as a freelancer.
