ARABIA Taika Teacup Trio
ARABIA Taika Teacup Trio
A set of teacups, saucers, and 20cm plates from the "Taika" series produced by the major Finnish tableware manufacturer ARABIA from 1975 to 1981. "Taika" means "magic" in Finnish. There is also a coffee cup in the same series, but this product is a larger teacup size.
The designer is Mr. Anya Yattinen Winqvist, who is from Russia and was in charge of designing Karelia together with the famous Ura Procoppe when he was at ARABIA. However, after leaving ARABIA, it seems that he mainly switched to designing tile designs. Her husband, Peter Winqvist, is also a designer at ARABIA, and the couple got married within the company. Mr. Peter is known for being in charge of the form design of ARABIA's masterpieces "Crocus" and "Kirsikka".
The eyeball-like pattern drawn on the Taika series is based on wild white berries that grow naturally in Finnish forests. Whiteberries, also known as snowberries or mulberries, are winter fruits that are hand-picked and crushed for use in jams. These fruits are drawn with vibrant brush strokes, giving the impression that the fruits are alive. The "magic" in its name may represent this unique dynamism.

Anja Jaatinen-Winquist
Anja Jaatinen-Winquist (1934-)
Born in Sortavala, a town in Karelia, Russia, bordering Finland. After graduating in 1955 from the Faculty of Design and Architecture at Aalto University in Helsinki, the capital of Finland, he joined ARABIA. After working as an assistant to Finnish pioneering female ceramic artist Aune Siimes, who belonged to the company, she was in charge of the design department of ARABIA products until 1974. Winqvist's most famous design is the Karelia series decorated with iron oxide, in which he devises a design that is cleverly decorated using matte brown tones.
Karelia straddles the border between Finland and Russia and has been the scene of many territorial disputes throughout history. Winqvist uses an unusual method of using iron oxide to create a brownish color to create a matte texture that evokes the soil of his hometown. It is said that she was in charge of color matching by kneading the soil herself at the manufacturing site, and her attitude toward not only design but also production is clearly conveyed.
