This is a hand-painted mug created by the art department of ARABIA, a leading Finnish pottery manufacturer. Hilkka-Liisa Ahola's works mostly consist of teacups, but this is a relatively rare mug.

Designer Hilkka-Liisa Ahola has her own atelier as an in-house workshop separate from the mass-produced production line at ARABIA, where she collaborates with painters to create handmade pieces. Hilkka-Liisa Ahola often likes to paint pictures of sunflowers, but her pieces are colored in a variety of ways. Yellow sunflowers are painted on a turquoise background. The glaze is thick and the inside is well colored a deep royal blue.

The basic shape is based on the S model of Ulla Procoppe, a famous Valencian company. It has a wide mouth and a cylindrical shape with an easy-to-hold handle called a "D handle." It has a large wide mouth cup with a capacity of about 300ml.

ARABIA - Arabia

ARABIA factory

ARABIA is a ceramic manufacturer representing Finland in the 20th century. Originally, ARABIA was a factory established in Finland by Sweden's Rörstrand as a base for producing pottery for Russia. The company's name comes from the fact that it was established in the Arabian district of Helsinki, the capital.

From the 1950s to the 1980s, many world-famous designers such as Ulla Procoppe, Birger Kaipiainen, Laiya Uosikkinen, and Esteri Tomura created many works, known as the Golden Age of ARABIA. Works that had a great influence on modern modern design were created at the time, from simple Scandinavian modern designs to highly decorative and well-crafted pieces. ARABIA is known for its masterpieces such as paratissi, crocus, flora, and corari, which are both practical and decorative items unique to Scandinavian tableware that are useful for both interior and everyday use.

Hilkka-Liisa Ahola

Hilkka-Liisa Ahola
Hilkka-Liisa Ahola (1920-2009)

Born in Helsinki, the capital of Finland. After working as a trainee at ARABIA in 1943, he moved to several design positions. He officially joined ARABIA in 1947, and over the next 27 years until 1974, he produced many atelier works featuring floral patterns and female figures known as HLA designs. Each of her works is hand-painted, so no two pieces are the same, and her work is characterized by a unique sense of color, with many of her works being dark brown in color, using blues, browns, and yellows in reduced brightness. She became famous for her Kukka (flower) series released in 1958, and the vases with hand-painted flowers were a big hit and continued to be produced until the 1970s. In 1974, ARABIA downsized its art department due to a financial crisis, and she also left ARABIA accordingly. Since then, he has turned his attention to making batik dyeing as a freelancer.
