Born in Sortavala, Republic of Karelia, Russia. In 1955, he moved to Finland and was in charge of painting in the decoration department of Arabia.
Assistant to Aune Siimes for 5 years. After that, until 1974, he was enrolled in the design department of Arabia. The best-known works are the Karelia series and the Taika series, the latter of which is written by her husband Peter Winqvist (
