Rare Lisa Larson Unique Piece Concrete Melancholic Male Statue
Rare Lisa Larson Unique Piece Concrete Melancholic Male Statue
This is a very valuable concrete figurine created by Lisa Larson in 2012. While Lisa Larson has produced popular works such as her well-known cat sculptures and lion statues, she also has a side as a ceramic artist. The former are often cute and well-received in Japan, but her side as a ceramic artist cannot be fully described by cuteness alone. Her lifelike ceramic works are particularly gloomy and even eerie. This is a statue of a standing man created by ceramic artist Lisa Larson as a one-of-a-kind piece.
Moreover, this work is a rare concrete piece among Lisa Larson's works. According to Lisa Larson's RETRO book, she has produced several bulldogs as concrete pieces. Judging from the year, this one was produced by Lisa Larson in her own studio in 2012.
Judging from the surface texture, this piece appears to have been made in a silicone mold, but the mold marks on the back have been carved away so they are not visible. The facial expression was shaped later with mortar, so it is slightly different in color from the main body. In order to achieve fine detail, a thin layer of mortar was applied to the face after the concrete of the main body had hardened, expressing the straight nose and melancholy eyes.
Overall, it is a simple piece, and the boundaries between the hands and the body are not clearly visible, but the simple material of concrete is used to beautifully express a man with a melancholy expression. There are probably only a dozen or so concrete pieces created by Lisa Larson in the world. Don't miss this unique masterpiece.

Lisa Larson
Lisa Larson (1931-2024)
A world-renowned Swedish ceramicist, he was born in Härlunda, a village of about 500 people in the Älmhult district of Kronoberg county in the Småland region in southern Sweden.
As a child, she aspired to be a fashion designer, but after enrolling at the Gothenburg Academy of Art, she studied ceramics. One day, she was discovered by Stig Lindberg at a competition, and after a one-year probationary period, she officially joined Gustavsberg as a designer. Shortly thereafter, in 1955, she released the Lilla Zoo series, and in 1964, she came up with the Afrika series, famous for its lion statues.
Lisa Larson has not only worked for Gustavsberg, but has also provided designs for Höganäs, the major domestic retailer Åhléns, and the German ceramic manufacturer Rosenthal. After leaving Gustavsberg in 1979, she became a freelance artist, working on a voluntary basis with companies, rather than as an exclusive contractor, and continued to work freely in various fields. In 1979 and 1981, she held solo exhibitions at Seibu Department Store in Tokyo, and the 1981 exhibition was visited by a total of 70,000 people.
