スウェーデンの国民的作家が生んだ 手のひらに宿る北欧の物語

This is a unique masterpiece (one of a kind) created by Lisa Larson. Bathing-themed sculptures are often seen in Lisa Larson's works, such as Rosa, Susanna Bathing , and Girls in the Bath . This piece depicts a woman bathing in a bathtub shaped like a large wine glass.

Although the piece appears rough at first glance, it is not made using bisque firing, but rather using a ceramic technique called chamotte stoneware. Chamotte is a technique in which fired clay is ground into powder and then mixed with clay again before being fired in a kiln, resulting in a rough texture and high durability. Chamotte stoneware is a pottery technique that Lisa Larson studied for many years at Gustavsberg and has used in many of her hit pieces.

The back of this piece in particular shows the characteristics of chamotte stoneware, and the hood of the face is roughly shaped, bearing the signature of Lisa Larson. What may appear unstable at first glance is actually very sturdy and durable. The bathtub in the wine glass in which the woman is bathing is glazed with a different glaze from the body, resulting in a pale blue-green color that is an intricate work.

The body is rendered in a thin white glaze, and the smiling face with eyes downcast is designed to convey the comfort of bathing. The interior of the body is hollow, a design calculated to allow the heat to pass through well in the kiln during firing. The carefully folded knees, feet, and hood of the face are painted with a dark glaze, carefully expressing the shadows created by the light shining in while bathing.

What is particularly noteworthy about this piece is its size: Lisa Larson's unique pieces are usually only about 15cm in size, but this piece is twice that size. This is a particularly unusual size among Lisa Larson's unique pieces, which tend to be small.

Since her death, the prices of her posthumous works have risen year by year, making them increasingly difficult to obtain. This film is well worth the price. Don't miss this opportunity to see it.

Lisa Larson

Lisa Larson (1931-2024)

A world-renowned Swedish ceramicist, he was born in Härlunda, a village of about 500 people in the Älmhult district of Kronoberg county in the Småland region in southern Sweden.

As a child, she aspired to be a fashion designer, but after enrolling at the Gothenburg Academy of Art, she studied ceramics. One day, she was discovered by Stig Lindberg at a competition, and after a one-year probationary period, she officially joined Gustavsberg as a designer. Shortly thereafter, in 1955, she released the Lilla Zoo series, and in 1964, she came up with the Afrika series, famous for its lion statues.

Lisa Larson has not only worked for Gustavsberg, but has also provided designs for Höganäs, the major domestic retailer Åhléns, and the German ceramic manufacturer Rosenthal. After leaving Gustavsberg in 1979, she became a freelance artist, working on a voluntary basis with companies, rather than as an exclusive contractor, and continued to work freely in various fields. In 1979 and 1981, she held solo exhibitions at Seibu Department Store in Tokyo, and the 1981 exhibition was visited by a total of 70,000 people.
