Michael Andersen & Son Bird and Girl Ceramic Plate Danish Vintage
Michael Andersen & Son Bird and Girl Ceramic Plate Danish Vintage
This is a ceramic plate produced by a pottery called Michael Andersen & Son on the island of Bornholm, Denmark. Bornholm is a Danish enclave, a small island in the Baltic Sea surrounded by Sweden, Germany and Poland. It is also called the jewel of the Baltic Sea due to its scenic beauty. Bornholm was originally an island with a thriving handicraft industry, and Mikkel Annasen & Son is a venerable pottery studio that was founded in the 1880s and continues to this day.
The designer of this porcelain plate of a girl holding a small bird is Marianne Starck, who made the company a global manufacturer in the 20th century. Starck, a long-term German designer from 1955 to 1993, was particularly fond of using bird motifs. The blue glaze is vivid and the mottled gradation gives depth to the ceramic plate. Her initials, MS, are engraved on the back.
