Ceramic plate of "Woman with a Lamp" at Tilgman Kiln
Ceramic plate of "Woman with a Lamp" at Tilgman Kiln
This ceramic plate was fired at a kiln called Tilgman in Gothenburg, southern Sweden. It depicts a woman walking down a corridor decorated with houseplants, relying on the light of a lamp. It is a ceramic panel with an atmosphere like a religious painting, and it is unusual among Tilgman's works to use human motifs. Many of Tilgman's works are designed to use ceramic plates in a narrow space, but this one is unusual in that it has spaces on both sides to make the motif in the center stand out. The part where nothing is drawn seems to express darkness. The color of the glaze is also considered so that the object becomes darker the farther it is from the light held in the hand, and the lower part of the vase is painted with black glaze than the upper part. If you look closely, you can see that it is a well-calculated design.
Tilgmann Kiln was founded in 1948 by Paul Harald Tilgmann as a studio that mainly produced art pieces. In the 1950s and 1960s at its peak, more than 10 famous designers competed to present their works. Each designer had their own themes, such as fruits, plants, and animals, but all of them had in common that they drew pictures with glaze on vertically long porcelain plates. I can hear you. The Tilgman Kiln was closed in 1974 after the death of the founder, Tilgman. The lower right corner is engraved with dp, Petrson's initials.
