This is an 18cm plate made by Gustavsberg, one of Sweden's leading pottery manufacturers. The series name Brohussard means "Blue Cavalry". Traditionally, the uniforms of Swedish cavalry soldiers are blue, the same color as the national flag, and even today, the cavalry around the Royal Palace in Stockholm, the capital, wears blue uniforms and protects the area. Brohussart incorporates the blue armor worn by cavalry into the design.
Most of Gustavsberg's tableware is decorated using a method called "transfer", which is basically pasting paper with a design on it, but this one uses hand-painted decoration, which is relatively unusual for the company. The characteristic of the Brohussard series is that each piece has a fairly uneven blue color. Sometimes the white base remains and the blue is not enough, and sometimes the glaze is crushed and it looks almost all blue.
This product was produced for only three years starting in 1968. The reason behind this seems to be that the individual differences in blue color were so great that it was difficult to make identical standard products.
