This is a lion ceramic plate produced by Lisa Larson for Gustavsberg in 1963, limited to 100 pieces. The Swedish title "LEJON I BUR" translates to "Lion in a Cage" in Japanese.
In Gustavsberg, there was a department called G-Studion, where well-known designers such as Stig Lindberg and Lisa Larson produced art works, apart from the mass-produced line. This is a work made in the atelier. Signed LISA. L. on the bottom left.

Lisa Larson joined Gustavsberg in 1954 at the young age of 23. Stig Lindberg discovered her talent after seeing Lisa Larson's award-winning vase at a design competition in Helsinki.

At that time, Lindberg invited four young designers as the person in charge of Gustavsberg, and asked them for one year to create innovative works of art that could be mass-produced while maintaining their artistry. It gave me the opportunity to be creative. Lisa Larson will work at Gustavsberg for 26 years after participating in the project.
In the 1960s, Lisa Larson created over 30 series alongside unique statues, containers, bowls and vases. Lisa Larson's lion statues are widely known for their Afrika series. The cute lion statue with a plump face and a small torso is still being reprinted and is gaining popularity worldwide.
Production of the Afrika series began in 1964. Generally, this year is the first appearance of Lisa Larson's lion statue, but in fact, "Lion in the Cage" was produced in 1963, the previous year.
It is a lion with sharp claws in an iron cage, but the expression is very gentle and cute, and it is clear that the style of Lisa Larson in later years was already established at this point. The work in 1963 means that Scandinavia is in the heyday of the so-called mid-century, and Lisa Larson is 32 years old and has been in Gustavsberg for 9 years. This ceramic plate is the origin of Lisa Larson's widely known lion statue. It is one of Sweden's treasures that tells us that she was talented from an early age.
