This large square plate was produced by Gustavsberg, a leading Swedish ceramics manufacturer. The series name, Bråhüssar, means "blue cavalry." The uniforms of Swedish cavalry soldiers have traditionally been blue, the same color as the national flag, and even today, the cavalry guarding the Royal Palace in Stockholm wears blue uniforms. Bråhüssar incorporates the blue armor worn by the cavalry into its design.
While Gustavsberg's tableware is generally decorated using a technique called "transfer," in which paper with a design is pasted on top, this piece is decorated by hand painting, which is relatively rare for the company. The distinctive feature of the Bröhüssar series is that each piece has a significant amount of unevenness in the blue color. Sometimes the white of the base remains, leaving the blue insufficient, while in other cases the glaze has collapsed, resulting in a piece that is almost entirely blue.
This model was only produced for three years, starting in 1968. The reason for this is that the blue color varied greatly from one piece to another, making it difficult to produce a standardized, identical piece. Even today, in the vintage market, Brohüssar watches tend to be valued more highly if they look clean.
