Rare Rorstrand Sylvia Leuchovius Large ceramic plate of small white birds gathered around a viola
Rare Rorstrand Sylvia Leuchovius Large ceramic plate of small white birds gathered around a viola
This ceramic tile was created by Sylvia Reuchovius, a famous Swedish ceramic artist who made a name for herself in the 20th century. Although Lisa Larson is famous for Nordic ceramic tile, Reuchovius also designed ceramic tile designs with her own unique sensibility between the 1950s and 1970s.
Four small white birds are painted on a deep indigo ceramic panel with viola petals spreading widely. Three of the birds are nestled together in the grass, while one stands majestically with its head held high. The thick indigo glaze is designed to dully reflect light and create a contrast with the white, making the birds stand out even more.
On the back of the product, the Rörstrand brand logo and the initials of the designer Silvia Leuchovius, SL, are handwritten by her. Below that, it is signed Atelier Sweden to indicate that it was made in Rörstrand's Swedish atelier.
Leuchovius ceramic tiles are not widely available on the market because they were originally produced in small numbers. More than half a century has passed since they were made, and the number of them is also decreasing. This piece is also rare. It is quite large, weighing about 4kg.
■ Detailed specifications
Manufacturer: Rörstrand Designer: Sylvia Leuchovius Year: 1960s Country of origin: Sweden Condition: ★★★★★ (5: Complete)
There is a thin crazing on one of the birds at the bottom right of the front. Crazing is a crack that runs on the glaze surface during firing during the manufacturing process, and is not a scratch during use or damage to the body itself. It has passed the manufacturer's inspection. There is an air bubble from manufacturing at the bottom center of the front, and there is a spot on the side where the glaze is not applied sufficiently (about 1mm). There are no cracks or chips overall, and the condition is perfect, retaining the original appearance from when it was made.

Sylvia Leuchovius
Silvia Leuchovius ( Sylvia Leuchovius, 1915-2003)
Born in the Småland region of southern Sweden. Originally, he wanted to become a clothing designer and took up a job as a dressmaker, but at the age of 30, after studying art graphics at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Gothenburg in the southwest, he changed his job to Rorstrand. He established himself as a unique artist, setting himself apart from mass production lines by manufacturing ceramic plates and still life paintings in-house. Although he has an unusual background as a designer, it is clear that he was highly regarded within the company, as he was entrusted with the design of Rorstrand's 250th anniversary model. Her ceramic motifs and her university background match those of Lisa Larson, and she has a distinct presence in the Nordic art scene.
