A gold-and-brown relief stands out clearly against the ultramarine glaze.

This is "Rooster (tupp / tuppfågel)" from the Väggplattor (wall-hanging ceramic tile) series, created by Lisa Larson at G-Studion in Gustavsberg in 1966. This substantial studio piece was shaped, decorated, and fired by hand by artisans in a studio separate from the mass production line, and is an impressive piece, measuring approximately 3cm thick and weighing approximately 3kg.

Highlights : A rare gold variation. The background ranges from pale blue to deep blue with hints of ultramarine. The iron-containing glaze and reduction firing (firing with reduced oxygen) create subtle variations in the blue and gold. Microcrystalline flecks add depth, and the color changes depending on the angle of the light.

• Modern x Folk Design A geometric design that combines the rooster's crown, wings and feathers with the shapes of leaves and fruit. It combines Cubist abbreviations with the warmth of Nordic folk art, exuding Lisa's experimental spirit from the mid-1960s.

• Specifications that suggest its studio origins: The back of this piece does not have the stamp that is usually found on mass-produced pieces. This detail suggests that it may have been produced in small batches in the studio or fired in a different process (individual pieces may differ depending on the operations of the studio).

About the Series
Väggplattor features six types of birds, including a bird facing left, a bird turning around, a pheasant, a cuckoo, a sandpiper, and a rooster. This piece is particularly popular for its strong visual impact and rare color combination.

Lisa Larson

Lisa Larson (1931-2024)

A world-renowned Swedish ceramicist, he was born in Härlunda, a village of about 500 people in the Älmhult district of Kronoberg county in the Småland region in southern Sweden.

As a child, she aspired to be a fashion designer, but after enrolling at the Gothenburg Academy of Art, she studied ceramics. One day, she was discovered by Stig Lindberg at a competition, and after a one-year probationary period, she officially joined Gustavsberg as a designer. Shortly thereafter, in 1955, she released the Lilla Zoo series, and in 1964, she came up with the Afrika series, famous for its lion statues.

Lisa Larson has not only worked for Gustavsberg, but has also provided designs for Höganäs, the major domestic retailer Åhléns, and the German ceramic manufacturer Rosenthal. After leaving Gustavsberg in 1979, she became a freelance artist, working on a voluntary basis with companies, rather than as an exclusive contractor, and continued to work freely in various fields. In 1979 and 1981, she held solo exhibitions at Seibu Department Store in Tokyo, and the 1981 exhibition was visited by a total of 70,000 people.
