Gustavsberg Salix coffee cup and saucer
Gustavsberg Salix coffee cup and saucer
This Salix coffee cup and saucer was designed in 1954 by Stig Lindberg, one of Sweden's leading modern design masters. Salix is willow, and willow leaves are arranged evenly throughout. Each leaf has a slightly different expression. The decoration of the leaves is done using a method called ``transfer'', in which a transparent sticker with a pattern printed on it is pressed on, a transparent glaze is applied over the top, and the decoration is re-fired in a kiln to fix it. Since crimping is done by hand, each cup will have a slightly different look.
Salix has been reprinted and comes in large and small tea cup and coffee cup sizes. However, the shape is trapezoidal, and the full vintage shape has not been reproduced. This coffee cup is small, similar to an espresso cup, but its form design is more sophisticated than current products. Bibi Breger, the designer who created the willow leaf pattern design, was also responsible for the decoration of Gustavsberg's Prisma, and is one of the people behind this mid-century masterpiece. This is a masterpiece from the mid-20th century, which is said to be the golden age of Scandinavian modernity.

Stig Lindberg (1916-1982)
Born in Umeå, the central city of northern Sweden. Originally from Stockholm's art school Konstfack ( Learn painting at Konstfack. He joined Gustavsberg in 1937 and gradually rose to prominence under the tutelage of his mentor, Wilhelm Koge. Twelve years later, in 1949, he succeeded Koge as the company's art director in charge of design.
Since then, Lindberg has released numerous works as a standard bearer of Swedish modernism in the mid-20th century. During Lindberg's time, the Gustavsberg workshop was at its peak, and its works from that time are recognized as works from the golden period known as ``mid-century,'' and are highly valued. Bibi Breger
Bibi Breger (1927-2014)
I was born in the town of Fagersta, about 100 kilometers north of Stockholm, the capital of Sweden. While studying textile design at the Konstfack University of Fine Arts, a famous art university in the country , he began taking on design work while still a student. Her husband Carl-Arne Breger is also known as a famous product designer.
Bibi was with Gustavsberg for a short period of time, from 1953 to 1957, but during that time he devised pattern designs that remain today, such as Prisma, Lotus, and Salix. After leaving Gustavsberg, she and her husband started Breger Design AB, which is based in Malmö in southern Sweden. Many of her husband Carl's famous product designs were created after he started his business, and it is clear that Bibi's ability was behind the company.
