Iittala Tapio Wirkkala Marski Whiskey Glass 240ml
Iittala Tapio Wirkkala Marski Whiskey Glass 240ml
A whiskey glass designed by Finnish glass artist Tapio Wirkkala. Tapio Wirkkala is a legendary designer who belongs to Iittala, and is a great master representing Scandinavian modernity in Finland in the 20th century who was involved in all kinds of industrial design such as fixtures, furniture, and stamps.
The series name Marusuki means "march" in Finnish. There are multiple size variations in the same series. This is a 240ml size that fits perfectly in your hand.
The main body has a bamboo knot-like projection that makes it easy to hold. The shape is not a straight body, but rather tapered toward the rim, and is shaped so that the scent of whiskey will accumulate. The bottom is rounded like a wine bottle and is made to prevent condensation even if ice accumulates. It looks like a light and elegant form, but it is a solid glass that is heavier than it looks like it is for whiskey. Since it was manufactured in a Finnish factory about half a century ago, the finishing is done by hand by the craftsmen of the time.
Iittala products were pasted with a triangle sticker from the late 1950s to the early 1970s. Since this is a seal after being renovated in the 70's, I think it was manufactured in the late 1970's. This work is currently out of print and has not been reprinted, so it is a series that can only be obtained in vintage.

Tapio Wirkkala
Tapio Wirkkala (1915-1985)
An important figure in Finnish industrial design, he left behind genius achievements in a variety of design fields. His extensive body of work ranges from glass, furniture and product design to sculpture, urban planning and Finnish banknotes. While his work was internationally acclaimed and he held exhibitions all over the country, he was a man who loved nature and preferred solitude, and lived in a mountain hut in a deep forest area. His unique perspective has brought him numerous awards, most notably the Gold Medal at the Milan Triennale three times.
In 1946, Virkala won the first design award at Iittala's competition and became the company's art director, gaining worldwide recognition. His achievements include over 400 glass works created for Iittala, especially the Ultima Thule series and Tapio series, which are still loved by many people today.
